With the refrain that the future is Sunny in La Marque, the city of La Marque was among 10 All America Cities announced during the annual National Civic League All America City awards in Denver, Colorado on Sunday (6/9/2024).

This was La Marque’s first time entering the contest, which has been around for 75 years.

The city joins Texas City (1997) and Galveston (1961) as the third Galveston County city to be recognized as an All America City.

La Marque is showcasing its efforts to overcome challenges within the city by engaging community feedback on priorities for using the nearly $4.3 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds the city received.

Using community town halls, an online dashboard, and civic engagement, the city could prioritize projects based on direct input from residents.

That included repairing water lines to an aging water distribution system, installing street lights, repairing streets, and mitigating stormwater and floods.

The city is also boasting its 2022 Safe City Initiative, which aims to have a 66% increase the number of neighborhood community watch areas with an officer assigned to each of the 15 areas by 2026.

There are 9 active areas now.

The program includes the recent installation of doorbell cameras for senior citizens in communities where crime stats show they will be most beneficial.

The third program highlighted will be the city’s LMTV, which was aimed to bridge the gap between the city government and its residents.

The multi-platform programming features regular features, including a weekly video update from the city manager, Shine on La Marque features that highlight locally owned small businesses, and regular video highlights from the mayor. The program also answers residents’ questions about city government matters.

LMTV is on the city’s website and YouTube, and a mobile app provides direct access to information on city services and how to get assistance.
